About the Book

The Book of Jonah is a story you would expect to read in a best-selling fiction book, not the Bible. Despite the story’s unbelievable details, this book’s events are true and to be understood as historical events that did indeed take place. Jesus confirms the historical nature of Jonah and the great fish in Matthew 12:40.

Jesus’ words not only support the historicity of this book but also help us understand the purpose of the book of Jonah. God is a God of compassion, mercy, and grace and will do anything and use anybody to bring sinners to repentance.

From the very first verse to the very last, God is at work. He is at work in Jonah’s life, he is working through his creation, and he is at work in the city of Ninevah. As we read through all the different moments of this story, we will see God’s sovereignty right in front of us.
