Paul points out Peter’s hypocrisy, wrong behavior even though we know he has the right belief, as confirmed in the passage before this.  This hypocritical attitude is just as detrimental as the legalistic approach to life, and Paul points out how this trickles down into throwing off the other believers.  It is Jesus, not our heritage, that saves us and brings us into the family of God.
